Just to let you know....

According to The New Federal Law there are "Y" age groups for quads which go as follows...

"Y6" Age 6 through age 9: 10 mph (or 16km) maximum set at the factory, 15 mph (or 24km) maximum if all speed limiting restrictions are removed.
"Y10" Age 10 through age 13: 15 mph (or 24km) maximum set at the factory, 30 mph (or 48km) maximum if all speed limiting restrictions are removed.
"Y12" Age 12 through 15: 15 mph (or 24km) maximum set at the factory, 30 mph (or 48km) maximum if all speed limiting restrictions are removed.
"Y14" "T" or "Transition model" Age 14 through age 15: 20 mph (or 32km) maximum set at the factory, 30 mph (or 48km) maximum if all speed limiting restrictions are removed.
"Y16+" "G" or "Adult" Anything over 30 mph top speed is limited to Adult use only.

Now I can't saw if you will have problems with a "Used" vehicle from a private owner, or your local law enforcement, but you won't be able to buy one from a Dealer for a "3 year old".

Can somebody tell me the difference between Y10 and Y12 since they both have the same maximum speed restrictrions. Is it engine size? Physical size of the ATV itself?

We want to buy an ATV for my 11 year old son. If there is no difference, we will buy him a Y10 now. If there is a significant difference, we will wait until he's 12 and get a Y12 since the ATVs are so expensive.

Thanks.

Hi catfishmom

Y10 classification basically covers 70cc-90cc ATVs.
Y12 classification covers 110cc ATVs.

Yes the physical sizes are different.

What a person needs to remember is the speed limiter on the atv only slows the atv to an extent... you need to remember the engine size has a roll in it to. I have had customers wanting a 110cc atv for a 6 year old, but a 110cc atv can't be regulated down to the speed specs of a 50cc, just because it has a 110cc engine. There is quite a difference. {No pun intended} some people that I have dealt with just don't understand this so I try to simply explain it.

Wait till he is 12 and buy him a 110cc atv, but watch what you buy. If your buying from an on-line store Watch The Spec sizes of the atv they can be confusing. There are a few good off-brands E-Ton and Crossrunner are a couple and they are not as expensive as The Big 4. In my opinion, if you buy it on-line there will be very little support and or parts. Feel free to call me if you need to know more.
